Toggle Tower Reach Toy
Project type
Toy for children with disabilities
Date
October-November 2023
Location
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
The Toggle Tower was a toy designed and prototyped in the fall of 2023 during Engineering Design Studio 100. The goal of this project was to design a toy for Reach Services, a local therapy clinic for children with disabilities, that would reinforce skills that were important to therapy goals of the clinic.
The Toggle Tower is a multi-layered puzzle box designed to reinforce fine and gross motor skills. Users complete fun tasks that simulate commonly used movements like pulling a drawer, or turning a key.
From this project, I learned the value of design intent and project management. A good plan is what kept us on track, and helped us overcome and issues we faced in fabrication. Another benefit is accurate resource management. We were able to source materials responsibly and sustainably to stay under-budget.
Our prototype functioned as intended, and met all of the benchmarks and requirements that we had set for ourselves, and its functionality.
